Merited Master of Sport, Honoured Coach of the USSR, Professor Arkady Nikitich Vorobyov, Doctor of Medical Sciences (born 3 October 1924), is tied to many victories in weightlifting and to success in science, organisation and teaching. Olympic bronze medallist (1952) and champion (1956, 1960), he was five times world and European champion and ten times USSR champion (1950–59), with many records.

He has served on the USSR federation presidium since 1952 and on IWF committees since 1968, coached the USSR team in 1963–69, headed the weightlifting department of GTsOLIFK, directed research at the Sports Committee in 1969–71 and has been rector of the Moscow Regional Institute of Physical Culture since 1977. He has written books and memoirs, supervised over 30 candidates of sciences, and holds the IWF large gold medal, the Order of Lenin and other awards; Party member since 1954, war veteran.
